74% of the elderly (more than 4 million) do not have a pension, 40% suffer from depression and at least 400 are abandoned every year in Colombia, which shows that there are no guarantees for that population and, consequently, Makes it "a challenge".

This is how a report from the Bogota-based university of La Sabana concluded that the population pyramid of the country has been inverted to the point that there are more people over 60 than children under five.

That is, it is estimated that by 2020 " for every two older adults there will be a teenager," explains the research carried out by the Faculty of Medicine of that university and the Colombian Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics.

In this way Colombia advances towards aging, since in addition the level of fecundity - reproductive capacity of the population - has decreased in more than 50% in the last half century.

The National Demographic and Health Survey of 2015 showed that in 1967, " the level of fertility per woman was 6.7 sons and daughters", while 7 years ago this level reached "2.1".

The La Sabana report warns that this panorama is worrying, since this great mass of the adult population will grow without having guaranteed its basic conditions like health or pension.

In fact, there is currently a shortage of medical personnel dedicated to this population. And is that although from 1982 to 2000 have been trained gerontologists in Colombia, of these there is hardly 4% in activity.

"This means that there are currently 80 geriatricians in the country and 30 in training; The majority of these specialists are in Bogotá, "the document added.

In addition, and to make matters worse , to this panorama is added the fact that nine out of 10 doctors who trained as health professionals did not have a specific instruction on the care or management of the elderly.

Another critical aspect of the report is that 74% of older adults do not have a pension , so they could be defined as being vulnerable and practically abandoning them.

Although 90% of the Colombian population has access and coverage to the health system , only 26% of people over 65 in the country have a pension.

As a consequence of this situation, 40% of older adults suffer from depression, making it the second most frequent pathology in that population after hypertension.

The research concludes that this complex reality responds to the social and economic inequity that the country faces, since older adults do not have "a universal non-contributory social pension".

"This leaves them even more unprotected, because many live in extreme poverty , with violence, mistreatment, abuse and poor access to the health system," the document added.

The researchers also highlighted the exclusion faced by the country's adult population, although "being 60 or older is not synonymous with being an old person."

As a result of not getting a contract and being excluded from the labor market, this population often feels useless, unusable and as a burden for their families and society in general, according to researchers.

In this sense, one of the main hypotheses that the analysts point out to him is that the Colombian labor model is not suitable for this population, since it tends to fall very fast in obsolescence.

"Older adults should be given more work opportunities and these should be adapted to their physical and mental condition. This means more openness - on the part of the employers - to the labor flexibility and to the increase of opportunities of development and human growth of these people ", adds the report.
